Speaker 1: everyone agrees it should be.
Speaker 2: There's a scientist out there saying NASA should hold off.
Speaker 1: We'll get to that without further ado. Then let's dive in.
Speaker 2: Let's start with a big one. As of today, NASA
Speaker 2: is officially targeting April first, and yes, we know how
Speaker 2: that sounds as the launch date for Artemis two. The
Speaker 2: six day window runs April first through to the six
Speaker 2: and just.
Speaker 1: To be clear for anyone just joining us on the show,
Speaker 1: Artemis two is the first time human beings will travel
Speaker 1: to the vicinity of the Moon since Apollo seventeen in
Speaker 1: December nineteen seventy two, over fifty years. This is genuinely historic.
Speaker 2: Or Astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft launched on the Space
Speaker 2: Launch System or SLS from Kennedy's Space Center in Florida.
Speaker 2: The crew is Commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, Mission
Speaker 2: Specialist Christina Coach, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen.
Speaker 1: Victor Glover will become the first person of color to
Speaker 1: travel beyond Earth orbit, Christina Coach will be the woman,
Speaker 1: and Jeremy Hansen will be the first non American citizen
Speaker 1: to leave low Earth orbit. This mission is full of first.
Speaker 2: The crew entered quarantine at Johnson's Space Center in Houston
Speaker 2: on March eighteenth, and they traveled down to Florida on
Speaker 2: March twenty seventh. From there, it's really just a matter
Speaker 2: of weather systems and that launch window.
Speaker 1: Now, the road to get here has had its bumps.
Speaker 1: There were liquid hydrogen leaks helium flow issue that caused
Speaker 1: a roll back to the vehicle assembly building. Just last month,
Speaker 1: engineers found a blocked seal in a cable connecting the
Speaker 1: rocket to the ground systems. That's fixed now. A successful
Speaker 1: wet dress rehearsal in late February cleared the way.
Speaker 2: And the mission itself, once it launches, will be a
Speaker 2: ten day free return trajectory around the Moon. They'll swing
Speaker 2: out to about five thousand miles beyond the looter surface,
Speaker 2: giving the crew and the world a view of the
Speaker 2: Moon that no human has had since Gene Cernan and
Speaker 2: Harrison Schmidt where they're in person now.
Speaker 1: Avery, you mentioned earlier that not everyone thinks this is
Speaker 1: the right moment to go.
Speaker 2: Yeah, this is a genuinely interesting wrinkle. A researcher at
Speaker 2: Mexico's National Autonomous University, Victor Velascorrera, has published a new
Speaker 2: analysis suggesting that we are currently in a window of
Speaker 2: elevated solar superflare risk. His models point to a high
Speaker 2: activity period running from mid twenty twenty five through to
Speaker 2: mid twenty twenty six focus on the Sun's southern hemisphere.
Speaker 2: He's recommending NASA delay the mission until the second half
Speaker 2: of this year at the earliest.
Speaker 1: And you can see why he'd be concerned. We've had
Speaker 1: a G three geomagnetic storm this week, which we're going
Speaker 1: to get to in a moment. The Sun is extremely
Speaker 1: active right now.
Speaker 2: Right though NASA has assessed the risks and all teams
Speaker 2: pulled go for launch. Lori Glaze from NASA's Exploration Systems
Speaker 2: Directorate said, and I'm paraphrasing that an incredible amount of
Speaker 2: work has gone into preparing for this, and they've had
Speaker 2: very open, transparent discussions about risk posture and mitigation.
Speaker 1: Oh, the mission is proceeding. But it does add a
Speaker 1: certain tension to an already extraordinary story, doesn't it. The
Speaker 1: Sun is at the peak of its eleven year cycle.
Speaker 1: We're heading back to the Moon, and a scientist is saying,
Speaker 1: are you sure you want to do this?
Speaker 2: Now? Humanity doing bold things anyway, fuels on brand.
Speaker 1: Honestly, we'll have everything you need to watch the launched

Speaker 2: Okay, so, speaking of the Sun, let's talk about what
Speaker 2: it's been doing to our skies this week, because it
Speaker 2: has been spectacular.
Speaker 1: A series of coronal mass ejections or CMEs that left
Speaker 1: the Sun on March sixteenth and eighteenth, arrived at Earth
Speaker 1: around the equinox, and they drove geomagnetic storming to G
Speaker 1: three levels on the NOA scale that's classified as strong and.
Speaker 2: The result we're auror visible from an extraordinary range of latitudes.
Speaker 2: We're talking reports of vivid displays from New York, London,
Speaker 2: northern France, even parts of Scotland lit up. And when
Speaker 2: you see aurora reports from Scotland, you're already dealing with
Speaker 2: something significant.
Speaker 1: But the story closest to home for many of our listeners,
Speaker 1: the Aurora Australis was visible across major Australian cities last night.
Speaker 1: The Australian Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe geomagnetic storm
Speaker 1: warning and the southern lights were reported from Melbourne, Sydney,
Speaker 1: Brisbane and Adelaide.
Speaker 2: That is remarkable. Sydney is not what you'd call a
Speaker 2: typical aurora viewing destination. If you were outside last night
Speaker 2: and happened to look south, especially from somewhere with a
Speaker 2: clear horizon, you may well have caught it.
Speaker 1: As of today, March twenty fourth, conditions are easing. We're
Speaker 1: dropping back to KP three to four unsettled to active
Speaker 1: with a slight chance of isolated Ga one minor storm intervals.
Speaker 1: So there may still be some activity tonight, but the
Speaker 1: peak has passed.
Speaker 2: Now, why is March such a good month for auroras?
Speaker 2: This is something a lot of people don't know.
Speaker 1: It's called the equinox effect. Around the March and September equinoxes,
Speaker 1: the geometry of Earth's magnetic field relative to the solar
Speaker 1: wind becomes particularly favorable. The field lines are better aligned
Speaker 1: to allow charged particles, in which means you can get
Speaker 1: strong auroral activity even from moderate solar events. Combined with
Speaker 1: the current solar maximum the peak of solar cycle twenty five,
Speaker 1: and we're living through what could genuinely be the best
Speaker 1: aurora viewing period until the mid twenty thirties.
Speaker 2: So if you've been meaning to chase the lights, the
Speaker 2: message from scientists is this is your window. The sun
Speaker 2: will start winding down from here, and the next solar
Speaker 2: maximum is over a decade away.

Speaker 1: Now let's head into deep space and into one of
Speaker 1: the most genuinely surprising pieces of planetary science we've seen
Speaker 1: in a while. James Webb has done it again.
Speaker 2: I love a story where the headline is basically, scientists
Speaker 2: found something they were almost certain couldn't be there.
Speaker 1: So the planet in question is called TOI five six' ONE.
Speaker 1: B it's a super, earth about twice the mass of our,
Speaker 1: planet orbiting a star around two hundred and eighty light years.
Speaker 1: Away and when we say close to its, star we mean,
Speaker 1: absurdly almost comically. Close it completes a full orbit in
Speaker 1: just ten point five six hours a year on this,
Speaker 1: world is shorter than the average working.
Speaker 2: Day it orbits at one fortieth the distance that mercury
Speaker 2: sits from our. Sun the day side is in, permanent unrelenting.
Speaker 2: Sunlight the planet is likely tidally, locked same, face always
Speaker 2: towards the, star same, face always in. Darkness the surface
Speaker 2: is thought to be a global ocean of molten.
Speaker 1: Rock and under those, conditions extreme, radiation extreme, heat extreme
Speaker 1: proximity to the. Star the scientific consensus was that any
Speaker 1: atmosphere this planet might have once had would have been
Speaker 1: stripped away long. Ago it should be a, bare airless.
Speaker 2: Rock except it. Isn't A Carnegie institution's led team Used
Speaker 2: webb's near infrared spectroscope NEAR speck to take the planet's
Speaker 2: temperature by measuring how much light the system emitted WHEN
Speaker 2: toi five six' one b passed behind. Its star if
Speaker 2: it were a, bare rock the day side should reach
Speaker 2: something close to four nine hundred degrees fahrenheit around twenty seven. Hundred,

Speaker 1: and the only explanation that fits the data is that
Speaker 1: there's an atmosphere up there redistributing heat from the day
Speaker 1: side to the.

Speaker 2: really like a wet. Lava ball the idea is that
Speaker 2: there's a feedback loop. Happening ball little gases bubble up
Speaker 2: from the magma ocean into, the atmosphere while the magma
Speaker 2: ocean simultaneously pull some gases. Back in it's a.
Speaker 1: Strange equilibrium what makes this scientifically significant beyond the, wow
Speaker 1: factor is what it tells us about rocky. Planet evolution
Speaker 1: we've assumed for a long time, that, small hot close
Speaker 1: in worlds can't. Hold atmospheres poi five SIX' one b
Speaker 1: suggests the reality is more complicated and. Potentially more interesting the.
Speaker 2: Team is now analyzing the full data set to map
Speaker 2: ten temperature patterns all the way around the planet and
Speaker 2: try to narrow down what the atmosphere is, actually, made,
Speaker 2: of water, vapor carbon dioxide silicate clouds all.
Speaker 1: On the table one of JWST's core missions is finding atmospheres,
Speaker 1: around rocky worlds because as far, as we know an
Speaker 1: atmosphere is a. Prerequisite for life poi five six' one
Speaker 1: b is certainly not habitable, in any conventional sense but
Speaker 1: understanding how a world this extreme hold on to its
Speaker 1: air could tell us a great deal about rocky planets that.
Speaker 1: Are far more temperate.
Speaker 2: There's something genuinely poetic. About today's next story We're going

Speaker 2: they brought home has been quietly waiting fifty years to.

Speaker 2: called secondary ion mass spectrometry, to measure sulfur isotopes and
Speaker 2: what they found was. Not what anyone, Expected.
Speaker 1: So for Context earth and the moon have remarkably, similar
Speaker 1: oxygen isotope signatures scientists have long assumed that sulfur would
Speaker 1: follow the Same pattern that the moon's interior would Look.
Speaker 1: Chemically similar to, Earth's in this regard dotton's team expected. To,
Speaker 1: confirm that assumption.
Speaker 2: Instead the volcanic material in the sample is strongly depleted,
Speaker 2: in sulfur thirty three one of. Four stable sulfur, isotopes
Speaker 2: The values are, in dotton's own words very different from Anything.
Speaker 2: We find, on earth he said he. Simply wasn't expecting
Speaker 2: that so?
Speaker 1: What does it mean there, are two leading explanations. And
Speaker 1: neither is boring the first is that this is evidence,
Speaker 1: of very ancient chemistry sulfur that interacted with ultraviolet light
Speaker 1: in an early thin lunar atmosphere. Billions of years ago
Speaker 1: the implication there would be that material somehow cycled from
Speaker 1: the lunar, surface into the mantle a kind of proto
Speaker 1: plate tectonics on a world we don't think has. Ever
Speaker 1: had plate tectonics.
Speaker 2: The second explanation. Reaches even further back the Leading theory
Speaker 2: of the moon's origin IS The giant impact a MARS
Speaker 2: sized body called thea Collided, with the early earth and
Speaker 2: the debris Eventually. Coalesced INTO the moon if thea had
Speaker 2: a very Different, sulfur composition from earth that signature might
Speaker 2: still be locked inside. THE lunar mantle today a fingerprint
Speaker 2: from a collision that happened four and a. Half billion
Speaker 2: years ago.
Speaker 1: The data doesn't currently favor one. Explanation over the other
Speaker 1: dotton is hoping that Comparisons with samples from mars and
Speaker 1: other planetary bodies. Will help resolve it but the. Broader
Speaker 1: message is clear these samples are still yielding genuine surprises decades,
Speaker 1: after they were collected and There are more sealed apollo containers.
