Speaker 1: Our first story today concerns the eagerly anticipated Polarist Dawn
Speaker 1: mission from SpaceX. Originally slated for late July, the mission
Speaker 1: has now been delayed to mid to late August. This
Speaker 1: delay was announced during a recent press conference focused on
Speaker 1: SpaceX's upcoming Crewe nine astronaut mission to the International Space Station,
Speaker 1: which also has a scheduled launch for No earlier than
Speaker 1: August eighteenth. Polaris Dawn is set to use SpaceX's crew
Speaker 1: Dragon spacecraft and Falcon nine rocket, and the mission is
Speaker 1: truly groundbreaking. It aims to perform the first ever private
Speaker 1: spacewalk with funding from billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaac Mann. Isaac Mann,
Speaker 1: who also commanded the historic Inspiration For mission in September
Speaker 1: twenty twenty one, is once again at the helm of
Speaker 1: this ambitious flight. The Polaris Dawn crew includes Isaacman himself,
Speaker 1: pilot Scott kid Poteit, a retired US Air Force lieutenant colonel,
Speaker 1: and two mission specialists, Sarah Gillis and Anna Menon, both
Speaker 1: of whom are engineers at SpaceX. Unlike the Inspiration For mission,
Speaker 1: which stayed in a lower Earth orbit, Polaris Dawn will
Speaker 1: aim to go even higher and conduct at least one spacewalk,
Speaker 1: the first ever all civilian extra vehicular activity. This mission
Speaker 1: is also the first in a series of three under
Speaker 1: the Polaris program, all funded and commanded by Isaac Man.
Speaker 1: The delays aren't new for Polaris Dawn, as this mission
Speaker 1: has faced multiple reschedules since its original planning for late
Speaker 1: twenty twenty two. The mission's complexity requires meticulous planning and preparation,
Speaker 1: hence the necessary delays. During the press conference, Sarah Walker,
Speaker 1: SpaceX's director of Dragon Mission Management, explained, there's a lot

Speaker 1: has moved quickly to identify and rectify the issue. The
Speaker 1: Federal Aviation Administration, which oversees commercial space activities in the US,
Speaker 1: has given SpaceX the green light to resume its launches.
Speaker 1: According to an FAA statement, a comprehensive review found no
Speaker 1: public safety concerns related to the anomaly. Essentially, this means
Speaker 1: that while the overarching investigation continues, SpaceX is free to
Speaker 1: go ahead with its launch schedule, provided it meets all
Speaker 1: other licensing requirements. Sarah Walker, SpaceX's director of Dragon Mission Management,
Speaker 1: mentioned during a recent press conference that the root cause
Speaker 1: of the liquid oxygen leak was identified as a crack
Speaker 1: in a sensor line on the vehicle's upper stage. This
Speaker 1: line had cracked due to high engine vibrations and a
Speaker 1: loosening clamp, but the issue has since been addressed through

Speaker 1: cosmic structures enter the Roman Space Telescope, which will use
Speaker 1: high resolution imaging to study the distribution of dark matter
Speaker 1: with a precision never before possible. The Roman Space Telescope
Speaker 1: will focus on the Andromeda Galaxy, our Milky Way's closest
Speaker 1: galactic neighbor, to observe tidal streams, elongated groups of stars
Speaker 1: that have been gravitationally torn from globular clusters. These streams
Speaker 1: act like cosmic ribbons, leading and trailing the clusters as
Speaker 1: they orbit around galaxies. By analyzing these streams, scientists aim
Speaker 1: to pinpoint gaps and disruptions that are likely caused by
Speaker 1: dark matter. The telescope's wide field instrument will produce images
Speaker 1: two hundred times larger than the Hubble Space Telescopes near
Speaker 1: infrared camera, yet at slightly higher resolution. This means Roman
Speaker 1: will be able to capture vast snapshots of the Andromeda Galaxy,
Speaker 1: allowing astronomers to identify and study multiple tidal streams and
Speaker 1: their dark matter induced gaps simultaneously. The data collected will
Speaker 1: help scientists identify the properties of dark matter halos, spherical
Speaker 1: regions of dark matter that envelop galaxies. These haloes are
Speaker 1: thought to play a crucial role in shaping the Universe's structure,
Speaker 1: and Roman's observations will provide invaluable insights into their size, density,
Speaker 1: and distribution.
