Speaker 1: NASA's Perseverance rover has achieved a historic milestone, becoming the
Speaker 1: first rover to climb out of such a massive crater
Speaker 1: as JA zero. After five months of steady climbing, Perseverance
Speaker 1: has finally reached the summit of Lookout Hill, positioning itself
Speaker 1: about half a mile above the lowest point of its traverse.
Speaker 1: This achievement has given us unprecedented views of both the
Speaker 1: crater floor below and for the first time, the vast
Speaker 1: expanse of Mars Neely Planum beyond the Crater rim. The
Speaker 1: rover's powerful cameras can now analyze geological features up to
Speaker 1: thirty five miles away, including small details like boulders, fluvial bars,
Speaker 1: and dunes at distances of more than five miles. The
Speaker 1: journey to this point has been nothing short of remarkable perseverance,
Speaker 1: methodically made its way past landmarks like Docks Castle and
Speaker 1: Pico Turkeno, stopping at strategic points like Faraway Rock to
Speaker 1: capture panoramic views of the crater floor. The rover's recent
Speaker 1: progress has been impressive, covering more than eight hundred and
Speaker 1: twenty feet in a single weekend as it approached the
Speaker 1: upper part of which Hazel Hill. The rover is now
Speaker 1: operating in what's called the grow Morn Quad, named after
Speaker 1: a Canadian National park in Newfoundland. Its next destination is
Speaker 1: a region named which Hazel Hill, which presents exciting new
Speaker 1: opportunities for geological study. Unlike the sandy terrain that dominated
Speaker 1: much of the Crater Rim climb, this area appears to
Speaker 1: have significantly more exposed rock, giving scientists a chance to
Speaker 1: directly analyze the geological composition beneath the rover's wheels. This
Speaker 1: exploration marks a pivotal moment in Mars research, as Perseverance
Speaker 1: ventures into potentially some of the most ancient surface areas
Speaker 1: on the red planet. The view from the crater rim
Speaker 1: isn't just spectacular, it's a gateway to understanding Mars geological
Speaker 1: history in ways we've never been able to before. Let's
Speaker 1: turn our attention to one of the most fascinating objects
Speaker 1: in our universe, the brown dwarf. These celestial bodies truly
Speaker 1: live up to their reputation as cosmic misfits, occupying a
Speaker 1: unique position between planets and stars. Imagine something that's too
Speaker 1: big to be a planet, but too small to be
Speaker 1: a proper star. That's exactly what a brown dwarf is.
Speaker 1: Despite their name, brown dwarfs aren't actually brown at all.
Speaker 1: The younger, larger ones are surprisingly hot and radiant, glowing
Speaker 1: so brightly that they can be mistaken for red dwarf stars.
Speaker 1: But as they age, they transform, shifting from fiery red
Speaker 1: to magenta and eventually becoming so dim that we can
Speaker 1: only detect them with our most sophisticated infrared telescopes. What
Speaker 1: makes these objects particularly interesting is their relationship with nuclear fusion.
Speaker 1: While they can't sustain hydrogen fusion like regular stars, they
Speaker 1: do get to experience a brief moment of stellar glory.
Speaker 1: In their cores they confuse deuterium into helium three, releasing
Speaker 1: energy in the process, But this celestial light show is
Speaker 1: short lived. Even the largest brown dwarfs exhaust their deuterium
Speaker 1: fuel within a few million years. Here's something surprising. Despite
Speaker 1: having up to eighty times the mass of Jupiter, brown
Speaker 1: dwarfs aren't much larger in diameter than our Solar system's
Speaker 1: biggest gas giant. This is because they lack the internal
Speaker 1: energy source that helps stars maintain their size. Instead, they
Speaker 1: rely on something called degeneracy pressure, a quantum force that
Speaker 1: essentially puts a limit on how compact they can become.
Speaker 1: After their brief fusion phase ends, brown dwarfs spend the
Speaker 1: rest of their existence slowly cooling off as they wander
Speaker 1: through the galaxy. Think of them as cosmic nomads, carrying
Speaker 1: the remnant heat of their formation, gradually dimming over billions
Speaker 1: of years until they become invisible to all but our
Speaker 1: most sensitive instruments. They're truly unique objects that help us
Speaker 1: understand the fine line between stars and planets and the
Speaker 1: incredible diversity of celestial bodies in our universe. SpaceX has
Speaker 1: just inked an exciting new deal that will see two
Speaker 1: more private astronaut missions heading to the International Space Station.
Speaker 1: These missions will utilize SpaceX's tried and tested combination of
Speaker 1: the Falcon nine rocket and crew Dragon capsule, marking another
