Speaker 1: we have the latest information about that potential asteroid impact. Yes,
Speaker 1: we're going to be exploring more about that. It seems
Speaker 1: the media just won't let it go away. I know
Speaker 1: we covered that last week, but we're going to do
Speaker 1: a bit more of an update for you. If you
Speaker 1: can't beat them, repeat them, as my newspaper editor used
Speaker 1: to say, Punch and sphere X are said to launch.
Speaker 1: What are they all about? Well? Look, and europic Clipper
Speaker 1: is now passing Mars. Yes, it's well on its way
Speaker 1: to the Jovian System, and we find out exactly what's
Speaker 1: happening as it scoots by Mars. Yes, very interesting. I
Speaker 1: know you're all hanging out to find out the latest
Speaker 1: about Europic Clipper. I am and it's been a while
Speaker 1: since we did a story about that one. A wonderful
Speaker 1: space probe and Hallie did some digging to find a
Speaker 1: terrific update for us, and we'll find out a bit
Speaker 1: more about that one later on. And while we're here,

Speaker 2: the largest space probes ever put into space?
Speaker 1: Now? I did read something about that. It has something

Speaker 2: Right, that's a cool one about a couple of very
Speaker 2: different new probes set to do some interesting exploration. Oh yes,
Speaker 2: I know these They are called SPHEREx and Punch.
Speaker 1: And those launches are imminent.
Speaker 2: Aren't they any day?

Speaker 2: On March first, NASA is Europa Clipper spacecraft flew past Mars,
Speaker 2: gliding just eight hundred and eighty four kilometers above the
Speaker 2: red planet's surface. This maneuver is designed to adjust the
Speaker 2: spacecraft's trajectory and position it for a critical phase in
Speaker 2: its two point nine billion kilometer track to the Jupiter system.
Speaker 2: The probe's destination is Europa, a moon of Jupiter coated
Speaker 2: with a shell of ice that conceals a vast, presumably
Speaker 2: salty ocean. Scientists suspect the moon could have the ingredients
Speaker 2: needed for life as we know it, and the five
Speaker 2: point two billion dollar Europa Clipper is NASA's first mission
Speaker 2: dedicated to gathering data that will help scientists determine whether
Speaker 2: Europa and other ocean worlds like it could indeed be habitable.
Speaker 2: Europa Clipper, with its massive solar arrays, spans the length
Speaker 2: of a basketball court, making it the largest spacecraft the
Speaker 2: Space Agency has ever built for a planetary mission. Following
Speaker 2: its launch on October fourteenth, twenty twenty four, from NASA's
Speaker 2: Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the spacecraft was placed in
Speaker 2: an initial path that included some buffer room around Mars,
Speaker 2: a precaution designed to ensure any issues with the spacecraft
Speaker 2: that arose in the week's following launch would not risk
Speaker 2: the colon with the planet. However, Europa Clipper has operated
Speaker 2: flawlessly so with everything on track, mission controllers commanded Europa
Speaker 2: Clipper to approach Mars orbit in November of last year,
Speaker 2: followed by two additional maneuvers in January and February that
Speaker 2: set the stage for today's Red Planet fly by. The
Speaker 2: meticulously planned loop around Mars will allow the spacecraft to
Speaker 2: harness the planet's gravity without expending additional propellant. It's like
Speaker 2: a game of billiards around the Solar System flying by
Speaker 2: a couple of planets at just the right angle and
Speaker 2: timing to build up the energy we need to get
Speaker 2: to Jupiter and Europa. Ben Bradley, Europa Clipper mission planner
Speaker 2: at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said in a statement, everything
Speaker 2: has to line up. The geometry of the Solar System
Speaker 2: has to be just right to pull it off. The
Speaker 2: spacecraft will reach its closest point to Mars at twelve
Speaker 2: fifty seven pm Eastern Standard time seventeen fifty seven gmt,
Speaker 2: traveling at speeds of approximately twenty four point five kilometers
Speaker 2: per second, according to the statement, Before and after this moment,
Speaker 2: the prope will harness the gravity of Mars, pump its brakes,
Speaker 2: and reshape its trajectory. Flying away from Mars, the spacecraft
Speaker 2: will clock in at about twenty two point five kilometers
Speaker 2: per second. The statement says. This flyby also provides the
Speaker 2: mission team an opportunity to test two on board scientific instruments.
Speaker 2: For one, engineers plan to turn on the spacecraft's thermal
Speaker 2: imager and test it by capturing multicolored images of Mars
Speaker 2: Astronomy Day.
Speaker 1: The Backcap, the first private spacecraft built to visit an
Speaker 1: asteroid is slowly tumbling in space, and the outlook is dire.
Speaker 1: The spacecraft, called Odin, launched atop a SpaceX rocket on Wednesday,
Speaker 1: February twenty six on a mission to fly by the
Speaker 1: small asteroid twenty twenty two to OB five for astro Forge,
Speaker 1: a company that aims to eventually mine the nearby space rock.
Speaker 1: But just hours after liftoff, astro Forge hit snags with
Speaker 1: the probe, and the last contact was twenty hours after
Speaker 1: the launch. I think we know the hope is fading
Speaker 1: as we continue the missumission, astro forge founder Matt Gallic
Speaker 1: said in a video update on X early Saturday, March first.
Speaker 1: So we are going to keep our head up. We're
Speaker 1: going to keep trying over the weekend and see how
Speaker 1: far we get. Is being very hopeful. At the time
Speaker 1: of Galax's update Saturday morning, the Odin's spacecraft was over
Speaker 1: three hundred thousand kiometers from Earth and largely following its
Speaker 1: intended trajectory. On Friday, astro Forge said the spacecraft's solar
Speaker 1: panels were generating power, with tracking data showing it at
Speaker 1: its expected position, but the probe has not sent full
Speaker 1: telemetry on its status. Galax said astro Forge experienced challenges
Speaker 1: with ground stations designed to keep communication lines open with
Speaker 1: ODIN after the launch, and I think missing our early
Speaker 1: ground stations really hurt the ability for us to fix
Speaker 1: any potential problems we had. He said. The one hundred
Speaker 1: and twenty kilogram Odin was only designed to last two
Speaker 1: point five hours on its internal battery that astro Forge
Speaker 1: received its last contact from the probe twenty hours after liftoff,
Speaker 1: boosting confidence that the spacecraft is powered. Odin is tumbling
Speaker 1: ever so slowly as it flies through space, Gallic added,
Speaker 1: confirming one theory based on observations of the spacecraft and
Speaker 1: when I say tumble, he says, this is a really
Speaker 1: really slow tumble. But in short, we don't know why,
Speaker 1: and that's going to be the problem going forward. He
Speaker 1: went on to say, we do think we have some
Speaker 1: theories on what's going on, and if one of them
Speaker 1: is true, then there's still a recovery path. Galaic said
Speaker 1: astro Forge will share some more detailed updates on its website,
Speaker 1: followed by an in depth analysis on anomaly later on.
Speaker 1: Galaic founded astroforge with the goal of mining the vast
Speaker 1: resources from asteroids for use on Earth and in space.
Speaker 1: The Odin mission is a scouting effort to fly Ya
Speaker 1: asteroid to twenty two O five to record images and
Speaker 1: data that would set the stage for a landing by
Speaker 1: Astroforge's next mission, called Vestry. The company built Odin in
Speaker 1: just ten months. Galax said it launched as a piggyback payload,
Speaker 1: alongside the company Intuitive machines, Athena Moonlander, NASA's Lunar Trailblazer
Speaker 1: moon orbiter, which is also suffering some issues after launch,
Speaker 1: and a small orbital tug demonstrator built by Epic Aerospace.
Speaker 1: He stressed that Astroforge is committed to that Vestry asteroid
Speaker 1: landing mission despite the challenges facing Odin probe. We have
Speaker 1: probably the best group of investors in the world. A
Speaker 1: lot of them have doubled down on this company, he said, so,
Speaker 1: regardless of the outcome of Oden, regardless if we ever
Speaker 1: talk to it again or don't, We're going to roll
Speaker 1: these findings into the next mission and we will see
Speaker 1: you back here in about a year to take another

Speaker 2: ZHO nine pm Pacific Standard time from Space Launch Complex
Speaker 2: four East SLC four E at Vandenberg Space Force Base
Speaker 2: in California. SPHEREx, which stands for Spectrophotometer for the History
Speaker 2: of the Universe, Epic of Reonization and Isis Explorer, is
Speaker 2: designed to investigate what occurred in the first second after
Speaker 2: the Big Bang and to search for essential building blocks
Speaker 2: of life in our galaxy. Meanwhile, PUNCH, which means Polarimeter
Speaker 2: to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere, will study the Sun's
Speaker 2: corona and how it transitions into the solar wind. SPHEREx
Speaker 2: will study the universe's earliest moments, specifically the first second
Speaker 2: after the Big Bang. It will also search for water
Speaker 2: and organic molecules, the building blocks of life. By mapping
Speaker 2: the sky in infrared light, SPHEREx aims to provide insights
Speaker 2: into cosmic history and the conditions that may have led
Speaker 2: to life's formation. PUNCH will focus on our Sun, capturing

Speaker 1: Ste thunkling, and here's that update on the approaching asteroid
Speaker 1: that continues to cause both consternation and interest across the globe,
Speaker 1: mainly because the continuing media hype about its potential risk
Speaker 1: of actually striking Earth, and regular listeners to Astronomy Daily
Speaker 1: will know that last week we reported that that won't
Speaker 1: actually happen spoiler alert. For a few days in mid February,
Speaker 1: headlines around the world buzzed about the potential for an
Speaker 1: asteroid to hit the Earth in twenty thirty two, specifically
Speaker 1: asteroid twenty twenty four four. You may remember that the
Speaker 1: chance of this impact rose to a high of three
Speaker 1: point one percent on February the eighteenth. That number has
Speaker 1: since dropped to near zero. But this news of a
Speaker 1: real life don't Look Up moment, referring to the movie
Speaker 1: of the same name, Don't Look Up, and a stark
Speaker 1: reminder of the threat that asteroids impact do. Actually we
Speaker 1: pose a risk to life on Earth, and there are
Speaker 1: countless numbers of asteroids and unknown number of comets throughout
Speaker 1: the Solar System. Most of these objects date back to
Speaker 1: the Solar system's very beginnings, and it's thought around four
Speaker 1: point five billion years ago. Now, research has identified approximately
Speaker 1: two hundred locations where these asteroids or comets have struck
Speaker 1: the Earth in the past to form meteorite impact craters,
Speaker 1: and it's very rare that planetary geologists can tell whether
Speaker 1: or not it was an asteroid or a comet hit.
Speaker 1: One of the most famous of these two hundred or
Speaker 1: so impact craters is the two hundred kilometer diameter Chick
Speaker 1: Slab impact Crater in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. This
Speaker 1: impact wiped out sixty five percent of all the species
Speaker 1: on Earth including it is thought the dinosaurs, Oh dear.
Speaker 1: One of the most research and best preserved craters on
Speaker 1: Earth is the one point two kilometer in diameter meteor
Speaker 1: crater in Arizona, which scientists say was formed fifty thousand
Speaker 1: years ago. I saw a fantastic photograph of that on
Speaker 1: Facebook not long ago, and somebody said, have you noticed
Speaker 1: how closely that impact happened to the visitors center, aren't
Speaker 1: they lucky? Two hundred craters over four point five billion
Speaker 1: years hardly seems like a big number or curse cause
Speaker 1: for concern. However, this number is a tiny fraction of
Speaker 1: the actual record. Most impact craters formed on Earth have
Speaker 1: been erased due to plate tectonics, volcanic eruptions, and erosion
Speaker 1: by water, wind and ice. To truly appreciate how common
Speaker 1: impact craters are, we need to look into Earth's closest neighbor,
Speaker 1: the Moon. Because of its proximity, objects that can hit
Speaker 1: the Moon can also hit the Earth. In fact, because
Speaker 1: the Earth is bigger, which means its gravitational attraction is higher,
Speaker 1: more asteroids than comets would have hit the Earth over
Speaker 1: the past four point five billion years than would have
Speaker 1: hit the Moon. Its best estimate is one point three
Speaker 1: million craters over one kilometer in diameter on the Moon,
Speaker 1: with another seven hundred thousand or so smaller ones. Asteroid
Speaker 1: twenty twenty four y four was discovered on December twenty seven,
Speaker 1: twenty twenty four, by the Chilean station of the Asteroid
Speaker 1: Terrestrial Impact Last Alert System or ATLAS, and it was
Speaker 1: immediately recognized to be a near Earth object. Additional telescope
Speaker 1: observations enabled astronomers to better calculate its orbit, hence the
Speaker 1: lower risk of impact calculated. In January, the probability of
Speaker 1: this asteroid hitting Earth surpassed one percent, which triggered a
Speaker 1: series of international rests. Sponsors. The International Asteroid Warning Network
Speaker 1: coordinates telescopes around the world to make further observations and
Speaker 1: can narrow down uncertainties in its orbit. On February eighteen,
Speaker 1: NASA and the European Space Agency announced that the probability
Speaker 1: of asteroid twenty twenty four four hitting the Earth was
Speaker 1: three point one percent, the highest ever recorded for an
Speaker 1: object of this size. This represents one in thirty two odds.
Speaker 1: For comparison, the chance of dying in a motor vehicle
Speaker 1: crash in the United States is one percent or one
Speaker 1: in ninety five. The chances of the asteroid hitting Earth
Speaker 1: were pretty significant. Thankfully, the most recent estimates of the
Speaker 1: probability of impact have gone down to near zero based
Speaker 1: on the improved calculations of its orbit. So guess what
Speaker 1: where off the hook for now?
